Sailing in the Caldera
Poseidon, the mythical Greek god of the sea, loves the sailing crews and friends of Greece who prefer the sea and the Greek islands. The weather these days is sunny and favours a trip at the sea. Your best option is an impressive sailing excursion on the caldera to admire the two volcanic islets of Palea and Nea Kameni and the view of the impressive caldera walls from below.
For this refreshing and relaxing experience, the reception will guide you properly!
Santorini Wine and its history
Viticulture and winemaking in Santorini have been practised for millennia. In the ancient ruins of the city of Akrotiri, archaeologists have discovered evidence that its residents not only enjoyed drinking wine (by way of numerous wine vessels) but also cultivated great deals of vineyards upon the island. The great eruption of Santorini’s volcano in the 17th c. BC led to a long pause in extensive viticulture and the export of wine. However, following the colonisation of the island by the Phoenicians in the 11th c. BC, the tradition of viticulture introduced by them has remained nearly identical until the modern era.

Visit the Excavations
The archaeological site of Akrotiri undoubtedly attracts thousands of visitors each year!
The excavations began in 1967 and revealed an advanced settlement 3,500 years old, which was buried under the ashes of the 17th century BC volcanic eruption. The findings were amazing: two and three storey houses, squares, streets, magnificent murals with images from everyday life, ceramics, jewellery, etc.
The findings can be admired at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera (08.00 – 15.00), while the buried city of Akrotiri is open 08.00 – 20.00.

TREKKING: Imerovigli – Skaros trail
A magnificent trail that takes the traveler back in time as it crosses the old capital of Santorini, named Skaros.
The trail starts from the small church of Agios Georgios which stands in Imerovigli just above the rock of Skaros. Skaros used to be the medieval capital of Santorini for about 600 years. Walking downhill, go past the church of Agios Ioannis Katiforis and move closer to the imposing rock. The geomorphology of the area reveals the violence of the eruption that created this magnificent site. The trail goes past the rock among relics and ruins of the old buildings and finally reaches the church of Panagia Theoskepasti (Virgin Mary the God-covered). The visitor, in awe, cherishes the absolute serenity and intimate contact with the island.
Duration: 1 hour, quite easy
Tip: Don’t forget your hiking boots and, of course, your camera!
Diving in the caldera
The underwater image of the island is impressive and ideal for diving. The seafloor is volcanic and its depth varies (the deepest point is 400m). So enjoy the diving experience next to an active volcano!
There are many places to dive and explore around Santorini and Thirassia. There are also caves in the southern part of the island and 4 ship wrecks, mostly located in Palea and Nea Kameni. The images of this vivid sea bed are stunning. The sea is crystal clear and the bottom lucid.
Tours and diving courses for beginners as well as experienced divers can be booked through your hotel reception.
Beach and Weather Report
These days you can observe a peculiar local phenomenon – it’s called anedosa. If you drove towards Pyrgos, Fira, Firostefani or Megalochori last night, you would have been impressed by the cloud of humidity that covered the settlements. It looks like fog, only the temperature is not low, like in the mountains where we usually find fog!
The crops and the vines are greatly benefited from anedosa, which usually prevails on the island in spring and autumn, because they get the necessary humidity. In combination with the porous layer of pumice stone that covers the island’s soil and absorbs humidity, this anedosa has in fact the same results as rain!
